BROWARD EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Session 1: Foundations & When ST Elevation Should Worry You
This session builds a practical framework for approaching any ECG quickly and efficiently. Rather than focusing on exhaustive interpretation, the emphasis is on recognizing when ST elevation is clinically meaningful and when it is not. Learners will develop a structured approach to ECG reading while identifying common pitfalls that can lead to missed or overcalled diagnoses. This foundation sets the stage for more advanced pattern recognition throughout the course.
Welcome to the Emergency ECG Course
This course takes a practical, case-based approach to ECG interpretation, with a clear focus on recognizing life-threatening findings. Rather than overwhelming learners with unnecessary detail, the material is divided into five sessions, each designed to build a specific, high-yield skill. Learners will develop a systematic approach, learn to identify Occlusion MI beyond classic STEMI criteria, avoid common pitfalls and mimics, recognize high-risk ECG patterns in syncope, and confidently approach dangerous arrhythmias.
The goal is simple: to help clinicians quickly identify the ECGs that matter most and make the right decision at the bedside.
Session 3: STEMI Mimics
This session teaches how to distinguish true ischemia from conditions that can mimic myocardial infarction on ECG. Learners will review common and high-risk mimics—including pericarditis, early repolarization, left ventricular aneurysm, and increased intracranial pressure—and develop strategies to avoid unnecessary cath lab activations. The focus is on recognizing key differentiating features while maintaining a high index of suspicion for true pathology.
Session 5: Emergency Arrhythmias
This session provides a practical approach to recognizing and managing dangerous arrhythmias in real time. Learners will review bradyarrhythmias, narrow complex tachycardias, and wide complex tachycardias with a focus on rapid identification and appropriate initial management. The goal is not exhaustive classification, but the ability to quickly recognize life-threatening rhythms and take decisive action at the bedside.
Session 2: Recognizing Occlusion MI
This session focuses on identifying Occlusion MI (OMI), particularly when classic STEMI criteria are absent. Through case-based examples, learners will develop the ability to recognize high-risk patterns such as STEMI equivalents and other subtle findings that should prompt urgent intervention. The goal is to move beyond strict criteria and toward clinical recognition of dangerous ischemia that requires activation of the cath lab.
Session 4: High-Risk ECG Findings in Syncope
This session highlights ECG patterns associated with sudden cardiac death in patients presenting with syncope. Learners will focus on identifying “can’t miss” diagnoses such as WPW, Brugada syndrome, massive pulmonary embolism, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and other high-risk conditions. The emphasis is on recognizing dangerous patterns that should prompt admission, monitoring, and further evaluation rather than discharge.
