BROWARD EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Presentation: Students on the emergency medicine rotation are required to present a case on the final day of conference. The date will be designated on the conference schedule. The case should be pertinent to emergency medicine and presented in a “newsletter” format. You can find examples of case presentations on the “EM Case of the Week” link above. Each presentation should be about 10-15 minutes and should cover the presenting complaint, pertinent medical history and physical exam findings, a differential diagnosis, and a brief discussion of the diagnosis. Include pertinent diagnostic images such as X-rays, EKGs, CT scans, etc. Some students obtain consent from the patient and take photos of pertinent physical exam findings. You must remove all patient identifiers (including account numbers, dates, etc.) prior to using photographs or any part of the medical record. We prefer primary source references/journal articles rather than websites like Medscape, UptoDate, Amboss. You should cite your references using APA format. If you are having difficulty choosing a topic, please contact Dr. Harrison.
EM Case of the Week: Contrary to years past, submitting your case for formal publication is now optional. Broward Health Emergency Medicine Residency Program sponsors "EM Case of the Week" to provide rotating trainees with the opportunity to publish an article based on an interesting case encountered during their emergency medicine rotation. Students interested in having their case published should contact Dr. January Moore jmoore@browardhealth.org for topic approval prior to writing their case. We are holding this publication to the same exacting standard you would expect to find in any major medical journal - please take note of the "Instructions for Authors" below.
