BROWARD EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Medical Students from FIU and NSU will be scheduled for one "EMS ride along" experience during the EM rotation.  This experience allows students to experience the rapid assessment and care done by EMS prior to the hospital.  This prehospital experience gives a unique perspective that will be a memorable experience in your medical training.

Here are some tips for the EMS experience:

  • Students will report to Firehouse 2 which is located at 528 NW 2nd St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. You will be assigned to ride on R202.
  • The shift is 0900 - 2100. Please be punctual for your shift.
  • You must sign the hold harmless agreement prior to your shift.  This form must be emailed to the EMS Bureau least 3 days prior to your ride alongEMSBureau@fortlauderdale.gov
  • Familiarize yourself with the EMS protocols on the website  flfremsprotocols.org or download the Broward County EMS app.
  • Bring a full spare set of clothes in the event that you need to decontaminate after a call.
  • Bring a 2nd pair of shoes. One set is for emergency calls and any other time outside the firehouse and the other set is to be worn only in the firehouse. Shoes should be comfortable. No open-toed shoes or sandals.
  • Bring lunch and dinner OR bring $20 to give the crew and they cook meals on site for you!
  • Students can opt out of the EMS shift by contacting Dr. Craig Harrison prior to your EM rotation.  You will be scheduled instead for a 12 hour shift in the ED.
  • If there are any issues with your EMS shift related to scheduling or logistics, please email EMSBureau@fortlauderdale.gov
