BROWARD EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Orientation: FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine students must watch the ED ORIENTATION video prior to your first shift. The video covers the objectives, grading, scheduling, documentation, educational conferences, and pearls for success on the rotation. There is also an explanation for student case presentations which are due at the end of the rotation. If you are new to the ED, notify your attending on your first shift and you will be given a tour. There is also a recorded tour that you can watch on the orientation video.
Computer Training: Be sure to watch the BHMC FirstNet Training video prior to your first ED shift. If you have any questions about FirstNet please contact Marie Chardeline Glaude or Rohi Warsi in clinical education.
Educational Conferences: Check under Conferences for the schedule of conferences medical students are expected to attend, including EM Rotators Procedures Conference and Grand Rounds conferences for EM, pediatrics and trauma.
Scheduling: FIU medical students spend the first 4 days of the rotation on FIU campus for required activities. Therefore the actual time at BHMC is 24 days. Students rotating at BHMC from FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine must set up their rotation through the medical school. You may contact EDrotation@browardhealth.org to see if you’ve been approved for the rotation. Once approved, you should receive an email about 1-2 weeks prior to your start date from Broward Health GME. They will be handling your schedule so send them your scheduling requests at least 2 weeks prior to your start date and they will be honored within reason. Your schedule will be posted prior to the start date of the rotation. Please check this website for current schedule, conference information, and downloads.
Shifts at BHMC are as follows:
FIU students have a 24 day rotation* that breaks down as follows:
13 shifts = 140 hours = 41 hours per week
1 X EMS ridealong = 12 hours**
1 X PROC Ancillary (10A-10P) = 12 hours
5 X RED AM ACUTE (6A, 7A, 1P, 3P, 600AC, 700AC) = ~54 hours
4 X RED NIGHT (7P, 8P, 10P, 5PC, 600PC, 700PC) = ~42 hours
2 X NON ACUTE (GREEN or YELLOW) = ~20 hours
*The first 4 days of your 28 day rotation are on FIU campus so calculations were made on a 24 day rotation at BHMC
